Winter's Tail Launched

Clearwater Marine Aquarium‘s rescued superstar bottlenose dolphin Winter now has her own children’s book. Winter’s Tail: How One Little Dolphin Learned to Swim Again launched today, written by the Hatkoff’s who brought us the adorable Owen & Mzee story I’ve used in several zoo classroom environments.

Winter was brought in by Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute and the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute back in winter (aha!) 2005. At the time she was estimated to be two-months old and suffered severe complications to her tail flukes from entanglement in a crap trap in Mosquito Lagoon. (And yes, that makes her an IRL bottlenose!) After rescue veterinarians decided to amputate the flukes. From here its all a famous and remarkable story of an incredibly tough and adaptable calf who features brightly in the new book.

For teachers: Scholastic and Clearwater have teamed up to do a live virtual field trip on October 7th and uploaded lesson plans to their website that deserve a look. Clearwater has also planned a celebration for Winter’s 4th birthday on October 10th. Speaking of birthdays, mine is at the end of the month! Please do put this on my birthday wish list!

Finally, you can follow Winter on Twitter! I’m still in the dark ages and don’t Twitter but for those that do, find her @WinterDolphin.
