Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor, Your … Refuse?

It’s no secret that I am pumped(!) for the ICC 2010 upcoming tomorrow. So is a certain Assistant Professor from the University of Georgia.  Dr. Jenna Jambeck, a professor of Environmental Engineering, wants ICC volunteers, coordinators, and site captains to literally make like The New Colossus and send her “the wretched refuse of [their] teeming shore”.

Yep, Dr. Jambek has a project concerning the weights of marine debris items and is hoping ICC participants will take the time out to box up and ship to her collected debris.   She requests that debris come to her in large ziploc baggies and in boxes along with identifying information about the location it was collected from as well as the date it was collected.

As appears on her website, the shipping address is:

Dr. Jenna Jambeck / University of Georgia

412 Driftmier Engineering Center / Athens, GA 30602

Questions about her project can be sent to:  marinedebrisweights@gmail.com

What do you think, WaterNotes readers? Should I send her the full catch from tomorrow’s efforts?  I’m hoping to drag in four to five bags worth of debris – easily 20 pounds of trash.  It would have to be sent as freight I dare say.  Postal rates these days are rather impossible.

  1. The debris may be a little whiffy by the time it gets there. I suggest putting it in a big pile and sending pictures!

    Good luck and happy trashing!
