Prosthetic Penguin Paraphenalia!

Ok, it’s not really paraphenalia. That implies that the little guy could get along without his upper beak. Not so, and thankfully this young Magellanic penguin was rescued, rehabbed, and resin-ed with a new prostethic to replace his original beak that was broken off following a boat (and possibly propeller) strike.

The only problem I see here? Penguin beaks are unique in shape to each individual and grow. It’s possible to identify birds based on beak shapes in a small colony. Hopefully his prosthetic won’t be a barrier to him attracting and keeping a good mate in his future home in California, even if he will never be a likely release candidate back into the wild in south America.
